The Font
The font is made of local sandstone and is probably medieval. It has a wooden Jacobean cover. Notice the evidence of a lock on the font. In 1236 it was ordered that all fonts should have a lockable lid to prevent the theft of Holy Water. It is said that this font had to be recovered on one occasion from the Green Pond, which was situated between the church and the River Dearne.
The font is placed by the entrance as it symbolises the start of a new life as a Christian. Baptism represents leaving behind the past and committing to God for the future. Perhaps there are things that you would like to leave behind in your life.
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11 v28 Lord thank you for the chance to start a new life with you , no matter what I have done in the past.
